When completing Form W-9 in RemoFirst, you’ll be asked to provide your Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN), select your federal tax classification, and answer additional questions related to tax exemptions and foreign ownership.
This guide explains each field in the Taxpayer information step.
Important: The information you enter should match your U.S. tax records. RemoFirst cannot determine your tax classification or provide personal tax advice. If you’re unsure which option applies, consult a qualified tax professional.

How to select your federal tax classification
Choose the classification that reflects how you or your business is treated for U.S. federal tax purposes.
Individual
- Enter the name shown on your tax return.
- If you changed your last name without notifying the SSA, enter:
- Your first name
- The last name shown on your Social Security card
- Your new last name
- If you are applying for an ITIN, enter your name exactly as it appears on line 1a of your Form W-7 application. It should also match the name entered on the Form 1040 filed with your application.
Sole proprietor
- Enter your individual name as shown on line 1 of your Form 1040.
- Enter your business, trade, or “doing business as” (DBA) name on line 2.
Partnership, C corporation, S corporation, or LLC other than a disregarded entity
- Enter the entity’s name as shown on its tax return on line 1.
- Enter any business, trade, or DBA name on line 2.
Other entities
- Enter the name shown on the required U.S. federal tax documents on line 1. This name should match the charter or other legal document that created the entity.
- Enter any business, trade, or DBA name on line 2.
Disregarded entity
A business with a single owner, including an LLC that is not treated as a corporation, is generally treated as separate from its owner for U.S. federal tax purposes.
A disregarded entity should:
- Select the federal tax classification of its owner.
- Enter the owner’s name on line 1. Do not enter the disregarded entity’s name on this line.
- Enter the disregarded entity’s name on line 2.
- The name on line 1 should match the name on the income tax return where the income is reported.
- If the direct owner is also a disregarded entity, enter the first owner that is not disregarded for federal tax purposes.
- If the owner is a foreign person, the owner must complete the applicable Form W-8 instead of Form W-9, even if they have a U.S. TIN.
Foreign partners, owners, or beneficiaries
This question may appear if you select:
- Partnership.
- Trust or estate.
- LLC classified as a partnership, shown as P.
Select Yes only when the conditions described in the form apply to your entity.
Generally, the box should be selected when:
- The partnership, trust, or estate has one or more foreign partners, owners, or beneficiaries; and
- The Form W-9 is being provided to a partnership, trust, or estate in which your entity has an ownership interest.
You should also select the box if you received:
- A Form W-8 or other documentation from a partner, owner, or beneficiary establishing foreign status; or
- A Form W-9 from a partner, owner, or beneficiary who selected the same foreign-status box.
Selecting this option may create additional reporting requirements, including Schedules K-2 and K-3 for certain partnerships. Consult a qualified tax professional if you’re unsure whether the question applies to your entity.
