NASpI (Nuova Assicurazione Sociale per l'Impiego) is the primary unemployment benefit in Italy, designed to provide financial support to employees who have lost their jobs involuntarily. It is managed by INPS (Istituto Nazionale Previdenza Sociale).
1. Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible for NASpI in 2026, you must meet the following criteria:
Involuntary Unemployment: You must have lost your job due to dismissal (licenziamento), expiration of a fixed-term contract, or resignation for just cause (e.g., unpaid wages, harassment, or workplace transfer over 50km).
Note: Voluntary resignation generally disqualifies you.
Contribution History: You must have at least 13 weeks of social security contributions in the 4 years preceding the start of unemployment.
Availability for Work: You must be registered as unemployed and declare your immediate availability to work (Dichiarazione di Immediata Disponibilità or DID) at the Employment Center (Centro per l’Impiego).
Residency: You must be legally residing in Italy. Non-EU citizens must hold a valid residence permit (permesso di soggiorno).
2. Benefit Amount and Duration
The amount and duration are strictly calculated based on your employment history
Feature | Calculation Method |
|---|---|
Duration | Paid for a period equal to half of the weeks of contributions in the last 4 years (maximum 24 months). |
Amount | Based on your average monthly salary. For 2026, if your salary is $\leq$ €1,456.72, you receive 75%. If higher, you receive 75% of that threshold plus 25% of the excess. |
Reduction | The benefit decreases by 3% each month starting from the 6th month (or 8th month for those over 55). |
Monthly Cap | The maximum monthly payment for 2026 is capped at €1,584.70. |
3. How to Apply
You must submit your application within 68 days of your last day of work. If you apply within the first 8 days, the benefit starts from the 8th day; if you apply later, it starts from the day after the application.
The benefit stops once you have started receiving a regular salary.
