The Ethiopian government declared June 1, 2026 a public holiday in connection with the national election. This declaration was made after the original holiday calendar for 2026 was shared with clients, so it is not reflected in previously distributed schedules.
Pay entitlements on June 1
| Situation | Entitlement |
|---|---|
| Employee does not work | Full regular daily pay (public holiday entitlement) |
| Employee works on June 1 | Regular pay plus public holiday premium as required by Ethiopian Labour Law |
Compliance note:ย Under the Ethiopian Labour Proclamation, employees required to work on a public holiday must be compensated at a premium rate. Failure to apply this correctly constitutes a breach of local labor law and creates retroactive liability.
Timesheet implications
Because this holiday was not on the original calendar, there is a risk that timesheets submitted for the week of June 1 may incorrectly record it as a regular working day. Please review any submitted timesheets for Ethiopian employees covering this period and correct them before payroll processing.
If timesheets have already been approved with June 1 recorded as a regular day, contact your Customer Success Manager or ourย Support Team so a correction can be made before payroll runs.
