June 12 is Philippine Independence Day, designated as a Regular Holiday under the Philippine Labor Code. Regular holidays carry mandatory pay entitlements that differ depending on whether an employee works on the day. Clients should ensure timekeeping and payroll correctly reflect these rules.
The Philippines uses a tiered holiday system. Understanding which type of holiday applies on a given day is important because pay rules differ significantly between types.
Holiday type classifications in the Philippines
| Type | No work | Work performed |
|---|---|---|
| Regular holiday (e.g., June 12) | 100% of daily wage paid (no-work, full-pay) | 200% of regular wage for first 8 hours (double pay) |
| Special non-working holiday | No pay (no-work, no-pay) unless excused by employer | Regular wage + 30% premium |
| Special working holiday | No pay (no-work, no-pay) | Regular daily rate only — no premium |
June 12 is a Regular Holiday. The no-work, full-pay and double-pay rules apply. Clients should not apply the special holiday rates to this date.
