The Ethiopian government declared June 1, 2026 a public holiday for Election Day after the original calendar was shared. It was not on the schedule you may have received at the start of the year โ but it is an official non-working day.
What you're entitled to
Did not work on June 1:ย Full pay for the day. No action needed beyond correcting your timesheet if it shows a regular working day.
Did work on June 1:ย You are entitled to public holiday pay on top of your regular wage under Ethiopian Labour Law. Flag this to your HR team so it's applied correctly.
What you need to do
- If your timesheet shows June 1 as a regular working day, correct it to reflect a public holiday
- If you worked on June 1, let your HR team know so your holiday pay is processed
- If your timesheet was already approved incorrectly, contact your HR team โ it can still be corrected
What if I already got paid for June 1 as a normal day?
If you worked on June 1 and were paid at your regular rate, you may be owed the difference (the public holiday premium). Contact your HR team to check.
